French May’s flagship exhibition "Mythologies: Surrealism and Beyond", co-organised with the Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) and the Centre Pompidou, presents works from the Centre Pompidou’s collection in Paris exclusively for Hong Kong audiences from 21 May to 15 September.

Curated by Mr. Didier Ottinger, Deputy Director of the Centre Pompidou, the exhibition presents important works by surrealist artists from the museum’s collection, illustrating the main stages and aesthetics of the artistic movement through the prism of “mythologies”, a concept that is at the core of Surrealism.

The exhibition brings together more than one hundred artworks by great masters. The public will be able to discover the masterpieces by major artists such as André Breton, Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dali, Francis Picabia and Max Ernst.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition took place on Thursday 20 May in the presence of Mrs Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, Mr Alexandre Giorgini, the Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, as well as the team of the French May festival, including Mr Andrew Yuen, chairman of the festival. A guided tour led by Mrs Maria Mok, director of the museum, followed the ceremony.

About Surrealism

Since its creation in 1924, the Surrealist movement sought to invent a mythology of modern times. In the wake of great poets such as Homer, Virgil and Dante, the surrealists wished to create a mythology of their time, that would reflect its community, history and dreams. Through Giorgio de Chirico, Greek mythology had a profound influence on early Surrealism and artists such as Salvador Dali, Francis Picabia or Max Ernst.

During World War II, Surrealism turned towards the divinatory aspect of mythology. Exiled in New York, the group deepened its interest in occultism and esotericism. The discovery of Native American and pre-Columbian civilizations opened up new perspectives.
