The Consulate General of France in Hong Kong is launching its "Science Rendez-vous" on March 22, 2016, with Professor Malik PEIRIS as distinguished speaker [fr]

Professor Malik Joseph Sriyal PEIRIS, Director of the School of Public Health of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medecine of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Co-Director of the Pasteur Research Pole of the University of Hong Kong (HKU-PRP ), will animate the very first "Science Rendez-vous" organized by the scientific department of the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, from 7:30 pm to 9 pm, at the restaurant "Chez Patrick Deli " at BRIM28.

Professor in Microbiology (HKU), Prof Malik Peiris, is a leading expert on viral diseases and is, as such, advisor on emerging infectious diseases for the Hong Kong authorities and many international institutions, including the World Health Organization (WHO).

Prof. Malik Peiris is renowned for its critical work in the identification of the SARS virus in HK in 2003 - for which he received the Silver Bauhinia Star of Hong Kong in 2008. His research activities lead to a better understanding on the emergence of new viral diseases such as the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, avian flu H5N1, H9N2 and H7N9, and MERS-CoV since 2013.

He is, moreover, founding member of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, since December 5, 2015.

Come and join the very first “Science Rendez-vous” (in English) on emerging viral diseases, which will be animated by Prof. Malik Peiris, to inaugurate the series of "Science Rendez-vous"! He will highlight that novel infectious disease threats continue to emerge, often with disastrous consequences, not just for human health, but also for economies and societies. The impact of SARS in Hong Kong in 2003, and more recently, Ebola and Zika are good examples. There is a need to consider these events, not only as health threats which they of course are, but also as threats to global security. Professor Peiris will discuss some of the recent and current emerging infectious disease threats facing us and consider how we should be better prepared to confront these challenges.
