Para Site participates in a professional Visual Arts encounter in France [fr]
Para Site, a Hong Kong contemporary art centre, is taking part in the next edition of the “Focus Visual Arts” programme organised by Institut Français from 16 - 20 April 2018 in France.
The “Focus Visual Arts” programme aims to promote the French artists in the field of visual arts towards foreign professionals, facilitating exchanges between French, foreign and Hong Kong professionals. It is initiated by the Institut français in partnership with the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau.
The invitation aims to give a closer look at the contemporary art scene in France and its diversity through a 5-day tour, encouraging the participants to develop international collaborations with French artists, curators and galleries.
The highlights of this programme will include:
- Foundations and contemporary art: opening of Lafayette Anticipations – Fondation d’entreprise Galeries Lafayette
- Solo exhibitions in major Paris institutions of French artists and artists living in France
- Regional day: Contemporary art in Metz (East of France). The dynamism of the region’s commitment in favour of contemporary creation over the years has been remarkable. The spring Focus offers an opportunity to explore the programme of several of Metz’s leading institutions: Centre Pompidou, the Frac (Regional Fund for Contemporary Art) and the Art Centre La Synagogue de Delme.
- Visits to a number of art centres in Greater Paris and to artists’ studios will complete the programme, along with time for exclusive meetings with several curators in Paris and the region.
The Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau is actively involved in this “Focus Visual Arts” programme. We have selected Ms Claire Shea, Deputy Director of Para Site, to take part in the programme and also financed her trip to France, as she offers a rich profile as a curator.
Currently the Deputy Director of Para Site since June 2017, Claire Shea’s responsibilities are many, including overseeing and guiding the goals of the organization and establishing future objectives, identifying opportunities and establishing partnerships.
Para Site is a non-profit art space based in Hong Kong that is dedicated to providing a platform for contemporary art in the city through exhibitions, publications and discursive projects aimed at forging a critical understanding of local and international phenomena in art and society. Over the past 21 years it has emerged as a leading organization that believes in art’s potential to engage in society with various communities. It has developed a strong reputation as one of Asia’s premier non-commercial contemporary art spaces through local and international exhibitions, a diverse range of education programmes, an annual large scale International Conference, an International Art Residency Programme, and publications.
Founded in early 1996 as an artist run space, Para Site was Hong Kong’s first space for contemporary art and a crucial self-organized structure within the city’s civil society. It is one of the oldest and most active independent art centres in Asia. Throughout the years, Para Site has evolved into a professional contemporary art centre through its practice to serve the global art scene of Hong Kong and be responsive to the needs of the arts community and wider public.
Para Site has achieved tremendous success in recent years, since its move to a new space in 2015 it has produced over 20 exhibitions in Hong Kong, hosted more than 20 residents, organized 40 public programmes, and 2 international conferences. In addition, during this period, Para Site’s exhibitions have also travelled to 10 venues on 3 continents, including a new exhibition previewing at the Dhaka Art Summit in Bangladesh in February 2018 and now showing in Hong Kong.
