Olivier Assayas and French Cinema at Hong Kong International Film Festival 2017 [fr]

French cinema continues to be very popular with Hong Kong audiences. The 41st Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF41) is pleased to present "French Night" on 21 April 2017 with Personal Shopper (2016), co-presented by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong & Macau and UniFrance. Director Olivier ASSAYAS will come to the screening and meet the Hong Kong audience.

ASSAYAS will introduce his Cannes Best Director award-winning latest film Personal Shopper in the festival. The film, galvanized by Kristen STEWART, is a multilayered drama imbued with mystery and the supernatural. His epic saga Carlos (2009), the three-part biography of an infamous international terrorist, will also be screened in HKIFF. ASSAYAS will conduct two master classes following the screenings of his two films.

Romantic dramas have been the mainstay of French cinema, and continue to enchant audiences. Frantz (2016) by François OZON explores grief and forgiveness during wartime; and A Woman’s Life (2016) is Stéphane BRIZÉ’s moving adaptation of Guy de MAUPASSANT’s novel.

Many moving family stories can be found in this year’s festival. Le Fils de Joseph (2016) is Eugène GREEN’s contemporary comedy of misplaced paternity; Mum’s Wrong (2015) by Marc FITOUSSI observes the absurdity of the adult world through an intern girl; and Katell QUILLÉVÉRÉ’s Heal the Living (2016) is a heart-wrenching experience about organ transplant.

Other French films with diversity are equally impressive, including Albert SERRA’s historical drama The Death of Louis XIV(2016), starring the incomparable Jean-Pierre LÉAUD, who won the Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes last year; and This is Our Land(2016), Lucas BELVAUX’s social protest picture sparking political controversy.
