Observation of legal proceedings
Alternately with the representations of other Member States of the European Union and on a rotation basis, the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau attends the trial of opposition figures. The observation of legal proceedings is a regular practice from the European Union around the world as a signal of our commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
European Consulates General notably follow cases that have been brought under the National Security Law, the enactment of which marked a concerning development.
France and the European Union reiterate their attachment to the respect of the independence of the judiciary, the rule of law and the fundamental liberties guaranteed by the Basic Law of Hong Kong and the "one country two systems" policy.
