Born in Hong Kong, Canadian citizen and French resident since 30 years, Mary Stephen is well-known for having being French arthouse director Eric Rohmers’ chief editor since 1991.

She has been building cultural bridges between the East and the West for now more than 35 years. She has directed several acclaimed fiction and documentary projects, some of which were selected in prestigious film festivals, such as Vision from The Edge at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 1998.

In addition, Mary Stephen has been collaborating with younger filmmakers’ projects from Turkey to China and Hong Kong. Some were discovered in French and international film festivals such as the acclaimed French-Chinese coproduction 1428 by Du Haibin.

She has been playing a major role in the cinema cooperation between France and Hong Kong. Her expertise leads her every year to travel to both countries, be it to instruct workshops on editing techniques at the prestigious French National Film School “La Fémis” or to take part in the education department of “La Cinémathèque Française” in Paris.

In Hong Kong, she instructed last month a storytelling workshop at Hong Kong University along with La Fémis graduate Kirsten Johnson. She bridges once again both of our cultures by regularly making the local public rediscover French classics (Rohmer, Tati and New Wave…). On top of it, she also cut the acclaimed documentary Flowing Stories directed by Jess Tsang in 2014 which was a French coproduction supported by the French National Centre for Cinema (CNC).

Lastly, Mary Stephen has been nominated for Golden Horse Film Festival’s Best Film Editing Award in acclaimed feature Our Time Will Come by Hong Kong filmmaker Ann Hui in 2017.
