Je t’aime, je t’aime – French arthouse filmmaker Alain Resnais passes away [fr]

One day after France’s Cesar Film Awards ceremony, one of its artisans passed away; Alain Resnais died aged 91 on Saturday in Paris.

The director, writer and editor of more than fifty films, has recently been honored during the 64th Berlin International Film Festival for his last film, Aimer, boire et chanter (Life of Riley) with his lifelong actors Sabine Azéma and André Dussollier.

Last November, the French Cinepanorama presents to the Hong Kong audience the restored version of Alain Resnais’ masterpiece Hiroshima mon amour with Emmanuelle Riva.

Filmmaker Agnès Varda remembers: « In 1954, Resnais accepted to edit my first film, La Pointe Courte . I’ll never forget his punctuality, his patience and respect for my clumsy film. It’s his generosity that impressed me the most in this film adventure, where money was lacking. Alain Resnais meant a lot to me at an age where we’re still struggling to define ourselves. We shared a taste for surrealism, Italian painting and wordplay ».

La Pointe Courte by Agnès Varda, editing by Alain Resnais, will be presented in its restored version during the Hong Kong International Film Festival on March 30 and April 6.

In his last films, Alain Resnais proved that he was a young director, living and working with envy; interested in chance, leaving his characters a part of mystery. Flirting is over.
