HK Cine Fan : "Children of Paradise" by Marcel Carné (4/07 & 19/07) [fr]
The screening on July 4 at 2:30pm will be followed by a talk with local film critics Bryan Chang.
Children of Paradise is a triumphant hallmark of poetic realism and one of the most celebrated films in the history of French cinema. The narrative takes place along the string of theatres and diners lining Boulevard du Crime in Paris, where colourful and boisterous crowds gather in an explosive carnivalesque spectacle that dissipates the distinction between theatre and life with burgeoning passion. Within this portrait of Parisian city life in the 19th century, affections and tribulations are played out between the beautiful and mysterious Garance and four men vying for her love: an evocative mime artist, an actor, a thief, and an oppressive aristocrat. Their stories sensitively illustrate the delicate rhythms of life, a sense of destiny, and an essential quality of humanity that affirms the inviolable idea of dignity amidst tragedy.
Starring Arletty, Jean-Louis Barrault, Pierre Brasseur.
