The festival will present in the « Indie Vision » category, two films of the Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck, on Patrick Lumumba, hero of the Congolese independence: a fiction « Lumumba » (2000) and a documentary
« Lumumba, la mort du prophète » (1991).
The films will be screened on Wedsneday January 22, at 7:30pm and 9:45pm.
Synopsis « Lumumba » :
What this film revealed is a dark episode of African colonial history suppressed for almost forty years: 30th June 1960, the independence day of Congo, nearly 80 years after the Belgium colonization. Next year, on 17th January, the national hero Lumumba who led Congo to its independence was assassinated.
Synopis « Lumumba, la mort du prophète » :
Sometimes history is like ripples spreading out, encountering obstacles, refracting but still dispersing, circuitously reaching individuals in the world at last. It was a photo brought by the director’s mum that initiated this documentary. Peck was so curious about the photo and it was his first time to hear the name, Lumumba. By then, he wanted to collect the pieces of the history, searching for traces left by this prophet.
The films will be presented with the generous support of the Institut Français.
