French music groups at Clockenflap 2017! [fr]
3 French music groups (Totorro,ONRA and College) will be playing at the 2017 Hong Kong Music and Arts Festival Clockenflap from 17-19 November at Central Harbourfront.
The Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau and Institut Français are proudly presenting French music groups this year at Clockenflap.
Totorro - 17 November
French quartet Totorro is one unique band: instrumental music that tells you stories, that makes you feel special - special sensations, special emotions. Like a magical maths teacher who makes you love maths in a magical way. No singer. Some people say it is "math rock" - you will just have to observe the two guitar players (Christophe Le Flohic and Jonathan Siche), the bass player (Xavier Rose), and the drummer (Bertrand James). Everything just match to perfection, like if they were living together for ever. It is solid.
Their first album, ""Home Alone"", out in April 2014, is some kind of synthesis of TOTORRO. The roots of this growing tree. Its music says "come in our roller-coaster, we’re gonna have fun". And it works! Fans of Beyoncé, fans of Sonic Youth, fans of the most specific math-rock band, everyone get caught! In October 2016 they have released their second album: ""Come to Mexico"". Like the Chapter II of this amazing previous chapter, the band develops their fresh but heavy, technical but fun, smart but naive, music. Like a perfect lemonade under a too massive sun.
ONRA - 18 November
French hip-hop beatmaker and globetrotting producer ONRA(Arnaud) has staked his claim as one of the most exciting beat-makers of the past few years, thanks to releases like the 80’s Funk beat album Long Distance, various Boogie edits and his Chinoiseries collections (made with Chinese music samples found while traveling Asia). His talent for delivering emotive, soulful hip-hop that really hits the spot is demonstrated through his multitude of releases since 2006.
Hailing from Paris, Arnaud has produced six albums and even more EPs. Through his various releases, ONRA takes influences from a hugely eclectic range of sounds, from Jazz through to Funk and RnB; carefully and respectfully using these styles to craft a unique and refreshing take on traditional Hip-Hop.
College - 19 November After Party
David Grellier, the French electronic music composer behind College, was born in 1979 in Nantes. In the late ’90s he acquired his first computer with which he produced several demos influenced by artists such as Jeff Mills and Aphex Twin, and labels such as Soma Records, Peacefrog and Warp. In 2007 he started Valerie, a blog that has evolved to become a record label and an expanding cultural network of international artists. 2011 saw Nicolas Winding Refn chose ’A Real Hero’ by College feat. Electric Youth as the theme song for his acclaimed and award-winning film Drive, propelling College into mainstream consciousness and securing him support across publications such as Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound and The Line of Best Fit.
