19th Francophonie Festival in Hong Kong,
A melting pot of French-speaking cultures and peoples

(6 March 2019, Hong Kong) From New York to Tokyo, Paris to Hong Kong, major cities around the globe have geared-up to present the Francophonie Festival in order to celebrate the upcoming International Day of la Francophonie, on 20th March. Organized every year in Hong Kong since 2001, the Francophonie Festival is an invitation to discover the cultural diversity of the French-speaking communities across the five continents through a series of cultural and educational events.

This year, Francophone Consulates General in Hong Kong together with Alliance Française Hong Kong have pooled their strengths to offer the audience an exceptional overview of the French-speaking cultures. From cinema to literature, music to theatre and art, March will be rhythmed with exhibition, seminars, shows, concerts, workshops and other French-speaking related activities.

This festive and free community-oriented festival will take place from 12 March to 30 March. It aims at entertaining people of all ages, including students, French learners and teachers, and those interested in knowing more about other cultures. The programme has been set up in partnership with local cultural and educational institutions, such as the leading universities (including The University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong), schools and bookshops.
Among the main highlights of Francophonie Festival 2019 are the concert “Mars en Folie”, which will gather four young and promising bands from Canada, Switzerland, France and Belgium; Mini Film Francophone Festival and the 4th edition of the Hong Kong French Theatre Festival.
Designed as a dialogue between cultures, the exhibition “Art Deco. The France-China Connection” runs from 6 March to 30 June in the CityU Exhibition Gallery. It explores reciprocal influences between Hong Kong, Shanghai and French cultures. More than 300 exhibits, including masterpieces from museums, institutions and private collectors are showcased. Some pieces are unveiled to the public for the first time and exclusively presented in Hong Kong.
Today 300 million people speak French around the world. The International Organisation of la Francophonie includes 88 states, 61 as members and 27 observers, which represents a third of the countries of the planet. French is the official language of 32 countries. It is the second most-learnt language in the world with 125 million learners. By 2050, it will be spoken by 800 million people.
The 19th Francophonie Festival in Hong Kong will be officially launched by a Press Conference on 12 March 2019 at The University of Hong Kong, under the patronage of our guest of honour, the Canadian novelist and French Academician, Dany Laferrière, in presence of the Consuls General of Belgium, Canada, France, Greece and Switzerland, Director of Alliance Française Hong Kong. Mr Laferrière will then deliver an inaugural lecture on the quintessential role of books and reading in a world dominated by the immediacy of news.
