11 French firms took part in Hong Kong Optical Fair, the major event for Asian optical industry professionals, from November 9 to 11, 2016. The French pavilion organized by Business France – the national agency that promotes the internationalization of the French economy – brings together the French offering under the “CRÉATIVE FRANCE” brand, a mark of traditional expertise at the leading edge of creativity, innovation and attention to customers’ desires. The 11 companies are GOLD AND WOOD, HENRY JULLIEN, JFREY, JULBO, LAFONT, LOOKVISION, LUZ, OXIBIS, PINTON, SEAPORT ODLM and VUILLET VEGA. Celebrities including Aristotle Onassis, Jacqueline Kennedy, Grace Kelly and Marlene Dietrich have succumbed to their sophistication, refinement and originality.
French manufacturers of spectacle frames supply over 70 international luxury brands. They are positioned in high-end and designer market niches, in partnership with big name fashion houses and opticians. France is the world number three exporter of spectacle frames: 50% of its production is exported.
France is Hong Kong’s number five supplier of spectacles. In 2014, Hong Kong imported more than €11.9 million-worth of French spectacles – a figure that is growing steadily. The Hong Kong spectacles market (frames, sunglasses and reading glasses, and contact lenses) was worth €491 million in 2015 and grew by 19.1% over the period 2013-2015.
The French sector’s industrial fabric mainly consists of SMEs. The 11 exporters will be exhibiting their latest designs, which reflect a long tradition of high-performance technologies, particularly in working with new materials. Their innovation relies heavily on continuous research by their in-house design units. Making a hi-tech spectacle frame can sometimes take as many as 300 separate operations; such frames have an unparalleled life span. An extremely rigorous quality control policy ensures that the brand image is always associated with superbly finished high-end products.
Whatever the trends in terms of design and materials (wood or precious stones, solid gold, or parts made of leather, titanium, cellulose acetate or carbon fiber), the quest for comfort and a product perfectly suited to consumers’ needs is at the heart of French spectacle makers’ concerns. The children’s spectacles sector is one of the best illustrations. Technology and hand craftsmanship work together to combine hi-tech optics and jewelry or fashion accessories. At this exhibition, which is strategically positioned to attract key buyers from the Asia region, the French offering is geared towards the expectations of foreign importers and distributors looking for high-quality luxury products.
According to Marilyne Houbani, organizer of the pavilion for Business France, “Our pavilion is ideally located at the entrance to the ‘Brand Name Gallery’, dedicated to high-end designers and products. The France Pavilion is visible and accessible to buyers looking for creativity, quality and originality. A cocktail reception will be held at the Harbour Café, located at the entrance to the Convention Centre, at 6:00 p.m. on November 10, with all the French brands and major Hong Kong media. A large-scale social media communication campaign is also planned.”
