Digital November: the month of French digital creation in Hong Kong [fr] [中文]

“Digital November” comes back to the city for the second year across November 2018 in Hong Kong. Video art exhibitions, artistic performances and screening in virtual reality, hackathon, French learning through photography applications will be available through November.


Digital November is open to the general public, professionals in the digital art and cultural industry, tech industry stakeholders, students, French learners and teachers and to those interested in knowing more about French digital culture. Through a series of events put together by local partners and coordinated by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, Digital November is an invitation to discover the latest French technology, its usage, content production and stakeholders in the digital world through a series of events.

It focuses on the three main sectors this year for the Hong Kong edition:


Digital November is part of a recurring worldwide campaign celebrating French digital culture. Coined as “Novembre Numérique” globally, it is initiated by Institut Français Paris, France’s public agency for the promotion of the French artistic creation abroad. In 2017, 26 countries and territories took part in this event across the world. 9 cultural and educational events took place during the first edition in Hong Kong.

Microwave International New Media Arts Festival


26 October to 4 November 2018: Main Exhibition


2 French installations are featured with video artwork “Onion Skin” by solo artist Olivier Ratsi and artificial intelligence-related artwork “Brain Factory” by French-German artist duo Maurice Benayoun and Tobias Klein

Symposium with the artists: 28 October from 14:00 - 16:15

27 October 2018 - “Unconference”

An unorthodox series of screenings, workshops and discussions on the application of blockchain technologies to publishing, film and music. Open to the general public, it features French speakers Patrice Poujol and Maurice Benayoun and takes place at School of Creative Media, City University.

1 to 11 November 2018 – “Project Room Exhibition”

A VR film showcase featuring the latest and best of French production: Alteration, I saw the future and Notes on blindness: Into darkness.

Hong Kong Arts Centre “Late Night Series – Art X” programme


16 to 18 November 2018 - VR x Theatre performance – "Cliffs of V"


Avant-garde narrative fiction project by French company Gengiskhan organised by Hong Kong Arts Centre within its “Late Night Series – Art X” programme. It blends real-life performance and virtual reality; the participants share the life of a prisoner who is about to barter his eyes for years of freedom.

16 to 18 November 2018 – workshop at School of Creative Media, City University
An educational workshop for students offering a glimpse into the best and latest French transmedia storytelling at the crossroad between virtual reality and theatre. It will be conducted by French director Laurent Bazin and its performing artists.

17 to 18 November 2018 – performances at Hong Kong Arts Centre
A series of the “Cliffs of V” artistic performances followed up by sharings with the artists organized by Hong Kong Arts Centre within its “Late Night Series- Art X” programme.

17 November 2018 - Film screening “Eyes Without a Face”


A classic horror French film in direct resonance with the VR x Theatre production “Cliffs of V”. A scientist obsessed with restoring the disfigured face of his daughter kidnaps women so as to transplant their features...

3 to 4 November 2018 - Innovation Hackathon - “Contest 4CSRTech”

Innovation hackathon on Corporate Social Responsibility, co-organised by Orange and France-HKUST Innovation Hub.

30 November - 4 December 2018 – “French Tech Tour China”

A two-weeks immersion program combining coaching sessions, workshops and business meetings for French start-up laureates to refine their marketing and business development strategy in the Hong Kong and Chinese markets. Organised jointly by the Public Investment Bank (BPI) and Business France Hong Kong, in partnership with Hong Kong Science and Technology Park.

Digital French learning


3 November 2018 - Workshop - “Learn French with digital photography”

A French learning workshop for both families and students organized by at Alliance Française de Hong Kong and conduced in French and English. Applications include Google Art, Photomaton, Instagram and Pinterest.
