Dance workshops and Public Forum with French choreographer Xavier Le Roy [fr]
The West Kowloon teams with internationally acclaimed French independent artist Xavier Le Roy to present Dance in Alternative Space, the first dance and movement programme in the Creation For Freespace series, from 22 January to 3 February 2018.
The West Kowloon has invited the esteemed French choreographer and dancer Xavier Le Roy to host 2 workshops and a public forum to share his dance style and philosophy with the public. The workshops in this programme invite participants to reflect on how works are shaped for public performance.
Workshops - Conducted by Xavier Le Roy & Scarlett Yu
As the basis for exchange, each workshop will use, analyse and re-enact elements of existing live-action exhibition works. Participants will be encouraged to explore differing modes of performance and ways of addressing the public, as well as conditions for the reception of performances.
Participants will learn and interpret movements, words and actions, and be involved in the development of situations where each member of the group alternately performs and acts as spectator or visitor for the performance of others.

Public Forum: Shifting Paradigms of Contemporary Performance Art in Asia
What do live performance practices in Asia look like today? This public conversation, the first collaboration between M+ and West Kowloon’s Performing Arts team, aims to uncover and define performativity within Asia by drawing on various interwoven connections of performance practices across the disciplines of visual art and dance.
Xavier Le Roy will share his experiences that continually investigate the representation of bodies and our relationship to time, followed by a conversation with dance artist Scarlet Yu and performance artist River Lin. The trio will explore how different modes of production are shaping performance practices in the region today. Each speaker will discuss how their own performances in museum spaces affect their engagement with the audience and in what ways they wish to create connections through the immediacy of their works.
Date & Time: 27 January 2018, 3:00pm – 5:30pm
Venue: Multimedia Theatre, Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, City University of Hong Kong
