Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur – the highlight of Le French GourMay 2018, is an exceptional region in the South of France, facing the Mediterranean Sea. Its capital, Marseille, is France’s second largest city and home to France’s largest port of trade. Two hours from the sea, lovers of gliding, hiking and outdoor adventures can take the road to reach the Southern Alps. Unlike other alpine destinations, the Southern Alps enjoys year-round sunshine, making it an ideal playground in both winter and summer. Between the sea and the mountain, the Côte d’Azur is a land with contrasting landscapes. The beauty of its beaches, the luxury of its palaces and the energy of its festivals… all make it an exceptional holiday resort.
Those born with an Epicurean soul and connoisseurs of fresh, natural cuisine will find a world of delicious flavors in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur with a bounty of sunshine right along. Its Mediterranean climate makes the sun shine 300 days a year, providing the best environment for producing olives (3.5 million olive trees), honey, and the black diamond – truffles (70% of national production), just to name a few among the many treasures of the region. This is reflected on the plate with colourful and fragrant dishes, and an authentic and multicultural cuisine. Exceptional flavours are found at the table of the greatest chefs: the Southern Region has 99 Michelin stars.
Rosé Wines and Appellation
Between Provence and the Rhône river valley, the area’s viticulture showcases a talent for combining the secular tradition with modernity. Uncontested leader of rosé wines, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur is the world’s biggest producer (10% of world production), the region in France that has the largest variety of wines, and the oldest vineyard. This diversity and quality have been recognized in France and internationally by the label "Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée" (Controlled Designation of Origin). Its famous AOC - Côtes de Provence, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, Coteaux des Baux, Coteaux Varois, Bandol, Cassis, Côtes du Rhône, Luberon, Ventoux and Châteauneuf du Pape, produce wines with a solar character of the Mediterranean climate, with great aromatic diversity.
Tourism in PROVENCE-ALPES-CÔTE D’AZUR
Sea, Provençal Countryside, and Mountain: An Astonishing Diversity
Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur has more natural parks than any regions in France: 11 are listed along with other exceptional spaces that symbolise the diversity of landscape and the richness of the fauna and flora in the coastline, the hinterland, and the mountain area of the region.
"Lavender is the soul of Provence.” – French author Jean Giono
Every summer, the highlands of Provence come alive with subtle colours. From the plateau of Sault in the Vaucluse to the country of Buëch on the foothills of the Alps, the idyllic lavender fields will soothe you in countryside Provence. A virtuous flower, lavender has powers to relieve sleep problems, anxiety, and respiratory congestion, hence becoming the ingredient of many fine fragrances and pure essential oils.
The Alps, its snow-covered tops, its protected areas, its sun-drenched valleys, its pure air and blue sky blow a wind of freedom. They provide the perfect backdrop for numerous nature activities such as hiking in summer and snow activities in winter.
Along the coastline, the extraordinary landscapes in Côte d’Azur can be seen the massif of the Maures and its thick forests of oak and chestnut trees, the red rocks of the Esterel or Promenade des Anglais in Nice.
