The 1st roundtable discussion of the Night of Ideas will focus on changes in education systems in response to recent technological developments, and how society will be shaped under these changes. Its social implications and challenges ahead will also be discussed.
As there are concerns regarding possible impacts brought about by artificial intelligence, experts have been calling attention to artificial intelligence trainings. Looking into futurology, research and innovation and the start-up world, this roundtable discussion will ponder on the following questions:

Prof. Dekai Wu is Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology)and Distinguished Research Scholar at Berkeley’s ICSI (International Computer Science Institute). He was named Founding ACL Fellow in 2011 by the Association for Computational Linguistics for his pioneering contributions to machine translation and inversion transduction grammars, which are machine learning foundations underlying modern translation technologies like Yahoo Translate, Google Translate or Microsoft Translate. Recruited as founding faculty of HKUST directly from UC Berkeley, where his PhD thesis was one of the first to construct probabilistic machines that learn to understand human languages, he founded HKUST’s internationally funded Human Language Technology Center which launched the first AI web translator over 20 years ago.
His artificial intelligence research focuses on natural language processing, language technology, music technology, and machine learning, and his cross-disciplinary work in language, music, and cognition centers on enabling cultures to relate. In 2015, Debrett’s HK 100 recognized him as one of the 100 most influential figures of Hong Kong.

Dr. Samuel Kai Wah Chu received a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Library Science from University of British Columbia. He completed 2 PhDs in Education – one focusing on e-Learning from University College London, Institute of Education, United Kingdom and another one focusing on Information Science from Hong Kong University, Faculty of Education, Hong Kong.
Dr. Chu’s areas of expertise include game-based learning, gamification in Education, 21st Century Skills, and Social Media in Education. He has involved in over 60 research/project grants with a total funding of US$7,582,075. He is a Member of the Humanities and Social Sciences Panel of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong and a Member of Curriculum Development Council Committee on Learning Resources & Support Services, Education Bureau. He obtained a number of awards including the Faculty Outstanding Researcher Award in 2013, Faculty’s Knowledge Exchange Award in 2016 and Excellent Health Promotion Project Award from Food and Health Bureau in 2017. He is ranked as the top 66th author in the world regarding his publications in library and information science. He is currently a consultant for UNESCO Bangkok, Oxford University Press, and Pearson Education Asia.
Dr. Toa Charm is the Chief Public Mission Officer of the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, helping develop the company’s strategic direction and drives Cyberport’s public mission-related programs with the goal of inspiring the next generation, nurturing entrepreneurial spirit and helping local start-ups go global.

Prior to joining Cyberport, he held senior management and consulting positions from leading multinational and Chinese companies in Asia Pacific in the past 25 years including IBM, Oracle, HSBC and Kingdee.
Dr. Charm has been actively contributing to the ICT industry development and community affairs in Hong Kong and Asia Pacific. He serves in a number of advisory boards in ICT industry, universities, startup communities and NGOs He is often invited as judge and assessor for ICT and innovation awards.
Dr. Charm holds a Doctor of Business Administration degree, a Master’s degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. He completed management programs from Harvard, UC-Berkeley and CEIBS. He is a TDWI Certified BI Professional and has completed a Big Data Certification Program from MIT.

Gerardo is also the co-chairman of the Artificial Intelligence Society of Hong Kong. An association with over three thousand members, dedicated to the further development of artificial intelligence technologies and adoption in the region.
He is a renowned public speaker in the field of artificial intelligence and a professional corporate trainer. With previous experience as a corporate consultant for multinational corporations, he constantly prepares organisation in conversation rate optimization, account-based marketing, customer journey building, and martech stack construction.
He holds an MBA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Bachelor in Science from the Reutlingen University in Germany.
